SouthSide Business Men's Club

ANNUAL EVENTS OF THE SOUTHSIDE BUSINESS MEN’S CLUB

Youth Achievement Program (YAP)

The Youth Achiever’s Program was established in 1994. The purpose of the program is to honor and recognize children who are striving to do their best to accomplish good deeds in their daily lives for themselves and others. We accomplish this by specifically honoring public elementary school children who are involved with the Safety Patrol at their school. Twice per year (spring and fall) the Southside Business Men’s Club affiliates with a Southside elementary school to assist with fundraising to help them meet their needs.

We organize a barbeque cookout to be held on school grounds. The kids and parents sell dinner tickets and offer sponsorships to area businesses. Then we honor the Safety Patrol children at one of our regular weekly meetings for lunch. This setting provides us the opportunity to present each School Patrol member with a much deserved Certificate of Achievement.

The money raised during these barbeque cookout fundraisers is sent in two directions. In the immediate term we provide parents and school administrators with needed funding for the children’s annual trips to Washington D.C. And the other part is placed in our long term charities accounts to provide college scholarships for those very same children.

Throughout every aspect of this event we recognize and honor all of the corporate sponsors who made contributions supporting these events!

YAP Charity Golf Tournament

Each year the Southside Business Men’s Club sponsors a Charity Golf Tournament.  Members and their guests are encouraged to participate. The tournament is a one day event held at a prestigious golf course in our community. Proceeds from this event are used to fund the Club’s Charity accounts and specifically provide scholarship funds for the young recipients of the YAP awards described above. There are plenty of sponsorship and networking opportunities here!

Fireman/Policeman of the Year Award

The Southside Business Men’s Club presents awards to a local fireman and a local policeman annually in recognition of their outstanding service to the community. The recipient’s names are provided by committees from the Jacksonville Fire Department and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. We honor them during one of our weekly meetings with full color guard salute and provide them with plaques and cash awards.

Tournament Players Championship (May)

The ‘Championship’ or ‘TPC’ is a seven day annual golf event held at the Sawgrass TPC stadium course in Ponte Vedra Beach. The Southside Business Men’s Club provides volunteers to work with the TPC and catering officials to staff food and beverage tents set up in various locations on the golf course. SBMC team members run cash registers and serve food and beverages throughout the entire week. This is an annual fundraising event for the Club and is considered to be a great deal of fun and a great way to network!

Veteran’s Day Parade (November)

The Southside Business Men’s Club has many members who are veterans of our wonderful armed services! Each year we engage members to participate in building a float for the Veteran’s Day Parade in honor of our veterans.  This is another wonderful way to have fun and network with other members as we take on the task of building the float for presentation. In 2008 the SBMC float received recognition from our city officials.  The Jacksonville Veterans Day parade has become the largest such parade in the southeastern United States! All SBMC members who are veterans are encouraged to participate in this event by riding on our float and receiving the recognition they deserve!

Children’s Christmas Shopping Spree (December)

Each year Southside Business Men’s Club works with Target department stores and local facilities that aid homeless families who are in need. We take a number of children from these families (usually 30-35) on a Christmas shopping spree to provide gifts for their parents, brothers and sisters and themselves! Each child is given $100 or more to spend. We raise money throughout the year from tips at one or more of the fundraising events and donate them to this very special giving opportunity! By escorting a child on a Saturday morning at Christmastime, you will, no doubt expel the Ebenezer Scrooge that may be lurking within!

Agricultural Fair (November)

The Agricultural Fair is held in Jacksonville each year in November. Our members volunteer to work as teams pouring and serving beer and having a general good time. Our volunteer hours contribute to the Club’s general operating fund and, as with other fund-raising events, the tips earned are used to fund our Children’s Shopping Spree.

Meet-A-Member

Our Club holds a number of after-hours events throughout the year to enable existing members and new members to get to know each other. We will arrange to hold an event at your place of business, and help to offset the cost by selling tickets to Club members at a nominal price. One of the purposes of these meetings is to encourage our new members to get involved in club activities and this is a great way to increase your networking opportunities, provide a more intimate exposure of your business to other members and just plain have fun!

Monthly Golf Outings

A monthly group golf outing is organized for Southside Business Men’s Club members at various golf courses in northeast Florida at discounted rates. Here’s another one of those wonderful networking opportunities!

Christmas Party (December)

This is our annual gala event - dinner, music, dancing!

Past Presidents Day (September)

With more than 77 years of history, you can imagine how many people have been involved in forging our Club into the organization it is today. During one of our weekly meetings in early September we take the time to honor our past presidents with a special celebration! There may be more in this closet than you could ever imagine, but it is always a lot of fun! We encourage you to come and get to know our wonderful past presidents and hear some of the stories they have to tell!
