Not Too Late To Join the Ladies versus Gentlemen Competition

The SBMC first ever Ladies versus Gentlemen competition is off to a great start.  Both teams, Team Scott (Scott Schilbrack) and Team Julie (Julie Wesling), have already brought several new members in. The team that sponsors the most new members in May and June will be rewarded with a $250 happy hour at a local restaurant.  It’s not too late to join one of the teams, so let’s have some fun and help our club grow.  As a reminder, our New Member Orientation will be on Wednesday, May 16th at 11:30am at San Jose Country Club.

Major Fund-Raising Events Continue in May

Since this newsletter is being published on Sunday, May 13th, the day of a celebration honoring mothers, I would like to start by saying Happy Mothers’ Day to all our Moms.  President Ronald Reagan said, “From our mothers, we first learn about values, caring, and the difference between right and wrong”.

My message this week is about giving and receiving.  We had an exciting week volunteering at TPC, working hard, having fun, and raising money for our Club. This Friday, we have another major fund-raising event – the 4th Annual Jax Craft and Import Beer Festival. I would like to thank Mike White with Client Focused Media for giving us the opportunity to participate in the Festival and raise thousands of dollars for the SBMC.  Thank you, Mike and thank you to all of you who will be volunteering at this fun event.  I look forward to seeing you at the Veterans Memorial Arena Friday night.

Some of you might think that we do too much in May – TPC, BeerFest, YAP Charity Golf Classic, and the Jax Jazz Festival.  I tend to agree with you; however, we don’t have much control over scheduling of these events.  In addition, all four events are different and each event attracts different club members. The fact that we are one of the largest civic organizations in town with almost 350 members should also help us fulfill our commitments.  All it takes is your willingness to give your time and participate in one of our activities.

There are two types of people – givers and receivers.  It applies to your day-to-day personal life and it also applies to your social life with the SBMC.  I appreciate so many of you for giving your time, talents and financial support to our club. You keep telling me that in return you receive many benefits from the club.  I believe that giving is better than receiving because giving does start the receiving process.

There is only one way to truly receive, to truly enrich yourself and enjoy prosperity and that is to first give.  It is just one of those universal laws, like the law of gravity and there is really no way around it.  If you went to college, you did not first seek proof of a job, but gave your time and money to enrich yourself so that you would be ready when a job came your way.  In the same way, you did not wait to be loved before loving, you gave your love and in return you were loved.  You gave your trust first and in return you were trusted.

Quote of the week: “One of the things I keep learning is that the secret of being happy is doing things for other people.” ~ Dick Gregory

Have a great week and I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday.

Week Two of the Ladies Versus Gentlemen Competition

Have you heard about our latest Membership contest?  It is our first ever Ladies versus Gentlemen competition.  Two teams, Team Scott (Scott Shilbrack) and Team Julie (Julie Wesling), started a friendly competition last week. The team that brings in the most new members during the months of May and June will be rewarded with a $250 happy hour at a local restaurant.

Team captains, Scott and Julie, invite every member of the SBMC to join one of their teams.  Based on the number of applications received last week, each team recruited the following team members:

Team Scott: Hank Duckworth, Jepp Walter, Mike Aselton

Team Julie: Julie Clements

Yes, we received six new applications last week.  We are off to a great start, so let’s have some fun and help our club grow!

2012 Leadership Team – Patrick Heatherington

Some things you may not know about our Sergeant at Arms:

  • Born in Roanoke, VA (Barely a southerner….he sounds like a Yankee)
  • Moved around every year as a child and got used to making new friends (this has served him well as he needs new friends often to replace those he’s offended)
  • Grew up Irish Catholic….reason number 3 why he’s always apologizing to people
  • Avid horseback rider all through Middle and High School (owned the tallest horse in the barn, an early indicator of his ego)
  • Built the motor to his first car in shop class a 1984 Mustang Convertible…it ran eventually
  • Worked at various Jiffy Lube and Express Lube Stores from age 16-19, at first working in the pit was fun but then they discovered he could sell and made him the annoying guy who came in and tried to sell you things you didn’t need like wiper blades for $40/pair
  • Went off to Nashville Auto Diesel College after high school….that lasted 2 mos.
  • Graduated UNF in year (Lucky#) 7 with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science
  • Started in banking 11 years ago in a grocery store bank (Confused about the timeline yet?)
  • Worked in Securities for a while and acquired Series 7 and 63 Investments licenses
  • Currently works as a Business Banker/lackey for Synovus Bank
  • Has no chance at ever beating Mike White in Racquetball but still goes back for punishment
  • Loves to Golf….though Golf doesn’t love him
  • Hasn’t found a woman who can stand him longer than 3 months (a month ago it was 2 mos) in the last 10 years….not surprising
  • Aspires to run a Fortune 500 company, or be President of the United States….well, the ego is there and the bar isn’t set very high

The Players Championship Week

The Players Championship is upon us and we opened our fund-raising season with a great party at Julie’s house on Cinco de Mayo. Our big thanks to Julie and Dan Clements for opening their home to us again for our annual kick-off party.  As always, we enjoyed delicious food, drinks, music, and a fellowship. Everyone who attended the party had a wonderful time.

I’m excited to be volunteering, along with many of you, at TPC this week. Somebody told me a while ago that volunteers are paid in six figures… S-M-I-L-E-S…  So, I’m sending my big smiles and gratitude to all of you, the SBMC volunteers, who make our organization one of the greatest in Jacksonville.

Quote of the week: “Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation’s compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain loving one another.”  ~Erma Brombeck

Have a great week and I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday.

Ladies Versus Gentlemen Competition

We have another fun contest to provide a bit of motivation to remind everyone to invite your friends and associates to come out to a meeting and see what the SBMC is all about. Julie Wesling, my co-chair of Membership, and I will be squaring off in a Ladies versus Gentlemen competition to see who can bring in the most new members during the months of May and June.

The competition begins this Wednesday, May 2nd. The winning team will be rewarded with a $250 happy hour at a local restaurant. Our Gentlemen club members are on Team Scott and our Lady club members are on Team Julie. Please join us for a friendly competition!

Volunteering In May

The Southside Business Men’s Club takes pride in volunteering at community events, so my message this week is about volunteering.  The month of May is a very busy but very rewarding month for our club. Three major fundraising events we’ve been preparing for are just around the corner:

  • The Players Championship, May 7-13th
  • Jacksonville Beer Festival, May 18th
  • YAP Charity Golf Classic, May 21st

Every spring we raise funds for our club and our club’s charities. Because of the time constraints, I find this task both exciting and challenging and today, I’d like to express my gratitude to all our volunteers for their support and participation. To some of our members who have not had a chance to sign up for one of our events yet, I encourage you to do so.  It is not too late, it would take a few hours of your time but it would be so rewarding.  I promise you that you will have a great time and feel good about the end-results. Also, what a great opportunity to invite your friends and co-workers to introduce them to our club and make a difference in our community!

As volunteers, we’re all a part of important and wonderful work.  When I think about what we do and how many lives we touch, it makes me very proud to be a part of such an incredible group of people. I appreciate you and I thank you for everything you do for our great organization.

Quote of the week: “Volunteering can be an exciting, growing, enjoyable experience. It is truly gratifying to serve a cause, practice one’s ideals, work with people, solve problems, see benefits, and know one had a hand in them.” ~ Harriet Naylor

Have a great week and I look forward to seeing you Wednesday.

SBMC Membership Growing Steadily

Membership in the SBMC is growing steadily and it is an exciting time to be associated with such a prominent club. Membership does have its privileges and bringing in new members is its own reward.

We have another fun contest to provide that little extra bit of motivation to remind everyone to invite your friends and associates to come out to a meeting and see what we are all about. Julie Wesling, my co-chair of Membership, and I will be squaring off in a Ladies versus Gentlemen competition to see who can bring in the most new members during the months of May and June. The winning team will be rewarded with a $250 happy hour at a local restaurant. Our Gentlemen club members are on Team Scott and our Lady club members are on Team Julie. We will review the details at this Wednesdays meeting and begin the competition the following Wednesday, May 2nd. I look forward to a spirited contest and meeting many of your friends and acquaintances.

Thanks To Hank Duckworth For Meet-A-Member Event Last Thursday

Our big THANKS to Hank Duckworth and Mark Jackson with Duckworth Construction Company for hosting a wonderful Meet-A-Member event last Thursday.  As always, we had a great time, enjoyed fellowship, delicious food and beverages. — The drink of the SBMC Golf Tournament, Drunken Pirates, was served to further promote our upcoming event along with Ahi tuna, sushi, pizza, and more…

We also learned more about Duckworth Construction Co — they specialize in Tenant Improvements, Commercial Property Maintenance, Specialty and Emergency projects.  We should keep them in mind when we hear of any commercial renovation projects coming up – they’re our interior Commercial Specialists:  “Exceeding Customer Expectations since 1988″.
