Issue 10, March 5th

Wow! Last week’s speaker, Captain Bob Buehn, USN (Ret), had everyone on the edge of their seats! He was the Commanding Officer at Guantanamo Bay from 2000-2003.  Before the tragic events of 9/11, Guantanamo Bay was just a regular military base in Cuba. If there was a “Mayberry” in the Caribbean, this would be it. On December 23rd, 2001 (3 months after 9/11) he received a phone call telling him to get ready – he was going to receive 300 Taliban detainees. I’m going to run out and get a copy of the book The Least Worst Place, Guantanamo’s First 100 Days by author Karen Greenberg. Bob Buehn gave a fantastic presentation and our audience engaged with some great questions afterwards.

Our speaker this Wednesday is Nancy Soderberg with Soderberg Global Solutions. Ambassador Nancy Soderberg is an American foreign policy strategist who held several senior level positions in the Clinton Administration, including Deputy National Security Advisor and Alternate Representative to the United Nations, with the rank of Ambassador.  I’m really looking forward to hearing what she has to say.
