Issue 132, July 3

This past week we had Bob Buehn, Director of the University of North Florida Military and Veterans Resource Center (MVRC) come and speak to us. He quickly briefed us on what his current position is at the University and what the MVRC does in relation to supporting current student veterans and family members of veterans using the GI Bill.

Buehn, a retired captain (U.S.N), gave us a great presentation on what it was like to be in charge of Naval Base Guantanamo Bay Cuba, and transcribed the events of 9/11 and the days leading up to receiving the first batch of detainees to the base. They had to turn a brig which had the capacity of just four people into a facility capable of holding over 200 in just three weeks. Most detainees were processed through and then eventually freed. Only around forty inmates remain today.
Buehn touched on the four administrations in charge and the policies going back and forth during their respectable tenure. It doesn’t seem that the base is going away any time soon.

Additionally, tickets are now on sale for the Sharks arena football game on July 23rd. Get them HERE before they sell out! This week is not only a protein day (steak), but we also have U.S. Congressman John Rutherford giving us an update on what’s happening in Washington DC. Hope you have a great 4th tomorrow!
