Issue 187, July 9, 2023

This week, we heard from past member House Representative Lake Ray, President of First Coast Manufacturers Association. Ray focused on the FCMA, sharing many of the changes in manufacturing over the years. Jacksonville is still a vibrant player in the manufacturing arena.

Ray showed us everyday products that are made in Jacksonville. It was interesting to learn that Budweiser, actual beer cans, guns, handcuffs, protective gear, rebar, and multiple other products start here. Also, Maxwell House is solely made in Jacksonville.

In the past, Jacksonville had to fight to keep Maxwell House here when the company wanted to move up to New Jersey. Today, that Jersey plant is gone and Jacksonville is all that is left. It’s hard to get fresher coffee than that.

Also, just recently, the National Ford plant was disassembled, though their production stopped 80 years ago with the building of the Model T. Jacksonville has quite the history!

We learned that 60% of the goods we use in Florida was actually produced in our state. Not bad for being considered a tourist destination.

Please join us this Wednesday as we brush up on our weather knowledge with Mike Buresh, Action News Weatherman. We are in the throes of hurricane season, and we need to be prepared. Bring a potential member and please don’t forget to bring a door prize to get recognized. Have a great weekend!

Respectfully,
Jeanne Maron
2023 President
