Issue 28, July 10th

I thought the Corey Vs. Shirk debate was tense, but MAN last week’s FL House District 16 debate had a fireworks display fitting Independence Day week!!!  Once again SBMC is “in the news” for our Civic engagement of candidates for elected office, 2 links are listed below.  Many thanks to Bill Bishop for coordinating the event, and in particular for recruiting Kent Justice to act as moderator.  Kent also asked that we send him details for the District 12 debate scheduled for August 3rd as he’d like to attend, but Rep. Lake Ray has been kind enough to agree to moderate and all 4 candidates have committed.  Also last week we welcomed our new Executive Assistant, Falyn Shilts!  Falyn comes to us with a wide range of experience, from the Jacksonville Jewish Center to A&E Television Network as a marketing specialist in New York.  Furthermore along with her proficiency in ALL the software upon which SBMC is reliant (Microsoft Office, Constant Contact, Word Press, etc.) how fitting is it that in the Southside BUSINESS Men’s Club we’re fortunate to have an Exec. Asst. with her MBA!  If you didn’t meet her last week, please introduce yourselves soon and make Falyn feel welcome.

A VERY special THANK YOU goes out to Angie Tekin for handling the search for Christy Rosen’s replacement.  As she has previously, Angie shifted her staffing expertise into high gear (at no charge to SBMC) and began the search about a month ago.  Fortunately she probably screened out half a dozen applicants she knew weren’t a good fit, and along with Falyn found 4 candidates to be interviewed by Mark, Julie, and myself.  The process was very professional, and by the end of the day we had the same opinions of 1st-3rd choice without having compared notes.  This will be the 3rd Exec Assistant for whom Angie handled the recruiting process to my knowledge.  Her track record is excellent so I know we have the best person for the job.

This week we will hear from our very own Rep. Charles McBurney speaking on his FINAL SESSION as our Representative in District 16.  For the past 9 years Charles has served us in Tallahassee as an SBMC member with integrity, strong ethical & moral foundation, but most of all as a small business owner.  We’ve been privileged to have him lead the Duval delegation with honor, and he’ll be leaving some very big shoes to fill.  I would personally like to request everyone who’s able, rearrange your schedules, and attend Wednesday’s meeting to show Charles the appreciation he deserves for his humble service.  The SBMC board held a special meeting a little over a week ago, and agreed to also waive guest premium charges as further incentive to invite others to attend the meeting out of respect for Charles.
