Issue 6, February 5th

Last Wednesday’s meeting was not only informative, but also very inspiring. I finally was able to hear Donna Deegan’s story. She’s a philanthropist, author, and community leader that has made tremendous impacts in the lives of breast cancer patients. As most of you know, cancer has affected me and some of my friends. I was amazed to learn how The Donna Foundation and the 26.2 Marathon was created. Donna and the Mayo Clinic are conducting ground-breaking research that will result in big gains for breast cancer patients.

The 26.2 with Donna, the Marathon to End Breast Cancer is Sunday, February 12th. There are a lot of ways to get involved. Please go to www.breastcancermarathon.com and click on volunteer. You can also purchase a brick in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of this run. Leave your legacy or celebrate a loved one impacted by breast cancer. The bricks will be added to the landscape of Oceanfront Park in Jacksonville Beach with the first installation occurring in the spring. There are two sizes, 4” x 8” ($150.00) or 8” x 8” ($300.00). All proceeds go to The Donna Foundation. SBMC’s 1st Vice President, Steve DeSorbo, has already purchased a $300.00 brick and is challenging all of our club members to do the same. You can purchase your brick at www.myDONNAbrick.com.
Our guest speaker this Wednesday is Paul Astleford, CEO of Visit Jacksonville. I’m looking forward to hearing about his plans for tourism in our great city!
