Issue 92 September 19

Last week we welcomed our public defender for the Fourth Judicial Circuit of Florida which serves Duval, Clay & Nassau Counties, Charlie Cofer. Mr. Cofer gave us an update on what the public defender’s office has been going through the past year and a half due to the pandemic. With the courts being closed last year, court cases surged to over a thousand additional cases. The numbers are finally dropping down to the historic manageable case load.
One of the biggest issues was that funds were withheld from the state because court was not in session. The office managed to made it through by using technology like zoom, but it was explained that there is no substitute for in person court.
This week we honor our past presidents with the annual past presidents’ luncheon. I encourage everyone to come and hear some club history that you might not have otherwise heard or known about. Remember parking is free and the food is good!
