Issue 95 October 10

Last week we welcomed Fourth Judicial Circuit Judge Adrian Soud to our meeting when he brought us up to date with the current operations at the Duval County courthouse. A lot has changed since we had public defender, Charlie Cofer, last month. For example; because of COVID, up until October 5th, nobody was granted a right to a speedy trial. Because that deadline has now passed, the system is starting to work on catching up on a “first-in first-to-trial basis”.
The judge also discussed the use of Zoom in hearings and the importance of picking a qualified jury for trials during this time with a limited jury pool. He also touched on how well the sheriff and JSO corrections have dealt with inmates and the process for quarantining an inmate when one tests positive for Covid-19.

I hope to see everyone this week when the base commander for NAS Jax will be joining us. Bring a guest and get them signed up in order to qualify for the membership drive. Remember, parking is free and the food is really good.
